The Video Editing Brief Template That Cuts Revisions in Half
What to put in a video editing brief so your editor gets it right the first time.
Most revision rounds come from a missing detail in the brief. Use this checklist.
The brief
- Goal. What should the viewer do after watching? Buy, book, subscribe?
- Audience. Who is this for, and what do they already know?
- Platform and format. 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9, and where it will run.
- Length. Target runtime.
- Hook. The first line or visual, or three options to test.
- Key messages. The two or three points that must land.
- References. Links to two or three videos you like, and what you like about them.
- Assets. Raw footage, brand fonts, colours, logo and music preferences.
- CTA. The exact text and where it appears.
- Deadline. When you need the first draft.
Keep feedback specific
Use timestamps ("0:12, cut the pause") rather than general reactions ("make it punchier"). With unlimited revisions on every Videomate plan, you can iterate freely, but a clear brief gets you to the finish in fewer rounds.
